Why Ingredient Combinations Matter

Building a skincare routine is more than stacking products — the chemistry between ingredients determines whether actives work as intended, cancel each other out, or create unnecessary irritation. Pairings to Approach with Caution

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)

Retinol + AHAs or BHAs

Vitamin C + Niacinamide

Retinol + Benzoyl Peroxide

AHAs/BHAs + Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)

L-ascorbic acid is formulated to work at a low pH (around 3.5). AHAs and BHAs also require a low pH environment. Layering them back-to-back can push the skin's surface pH lower than needed and increase irritation without additional benefit. Prescription Retinoids + Most Strong Actives

When using a prescription retinoid, combining it with other actives — exfoliants, vitamin C, or benzoyl peroxide — substantially increases the risk of barrier disruption. Prescription Retinoids Require Professional Guidance

Over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids (such as tretinoin) are not interchangeable in terms of potency or how the skin responds to them.
